Google Desktop Beta 2

Just around 2 o’clock today as I was sitting in my office, a colleague, Ro, knocked on my door with an ecstatic smile on his asking how I liked the new Google Desktop. I looked at him and said, “No way.” Quickly I was off, tickling the keyboard, quickling navigating to the Google Desktop homepage.
Needless to say I’m blown away by the interface and the fact that it sits there riding the side of the screen. After having Google come out with the customized search page and Microsoft quickly come alongside and copy it using similar tools (Ajax, DHTML, etc.). That being said, I’m curious to see what Microsoft has up their sleeves.
Foreward thinking though, with Microsoft cornering the market with Visual Studio .NET, I’m curious if Google is going to go and invest in the Mono project or something else and begin to craft its own web accessible IDE. Oh well, just a crazy thought I thought to throw out there.

  1. “Google come out with the customized search page and Microsoft quickly come alongside”

    Microsoft’s start.com existed before Google’s /ig

  2. Actually Eric, you’re a little off. Yes, Start.com came out first, however the third iteration came out after Google /ig.

    start.com/1 -> released in March 05
    start.com/2 -> released in April 05
    start.com/3 -> released in June 05

    google/ig -> released in May 05
